Software Engineering

Custom software engineering is the design and construction of software built specifically for one organisation’s processes, rather than adapting that organisation to fit a packaged product.

Systems built around how your organisation actually works, rather than the other way around.

What this is

Why teams bring us this work.

Packaged software asks you to change your process to fit its assumptions. That is often the right trade — until the process in question is the thing that makes you competitive. Custom engineering is worth it precisely where your workflow is your advantage, or where the integration burden of an off-the-shelf product exceeds the cost of building.

We build enterprise platforms, SaaS products, APIs and the cloud architecture underneath them. Where systems already exist we usually modernise rather than replace: strangler-pattern migrations that move functionality piece by piece, so the business keeps running instead of betting everything on a cutover weekend.

You likely need this if

  • Critical processes running on spreadsheets and manual handoffs
  • A legacy system nobody wants to touch but everyone depends on
  • Off-the-shelf tools that need more integration work than they save
  • A product that works but will not survive the next order of magnitude
Capabilities

What we deliver.

  • Custom enterprise software
  • SaaS platform development
  • API & backend engineering
  • Cloud architecture (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Microservices & distributed systems
  • Legacy modernisation
  • System integration
  • Technical due diligence
How we work

Our Software process.

  1. Discovery & architecture

We map the domain, the constraints and the integrations, then produce a specification and architecture you own — usable even if you build it elsewhere.

  2. Foundations

Repository, environments, CI/CD, observability and security baseline, established before feature work rather than after.

  3. Incremental delivery

Reviewed increments against automated tests, so working software is visible from early on and scope can be steered with real information.

  4. Assurance

Threat modelling, dependency audit, load testing and penetration testing before release.

  5. Handover

Documentation, runbooks and knowledge transfer, so your team can operate and extend the system without us.

Questions

Software — common questions.

What is custom software development?

Custom software development is the design and construction of software built specifically for one organisation’s processes, rather than adapting that organisation to fit a packaged product. It is chosen where the workflow is a competitive advantage or where integration costs exceed the cost of building.

Custom software or off-the-shelf — how do we decide?

Buy where the process is standard and the product is mature; build where the process is your differentiator or where no product fits without heavy customisation. If you would spend more integrating and working around a tool than building the capability, building is usually cheaper over three years.

Can you modernise a legacy system without a rewrite?

Usually, yes. We prefer incremental migration: new functionality is built alongside the old system and traffic moves across route by route until the legacy component can be retired. It takes longer than a rewrite on paper and fails far less often in practice.

Who owns the code you write?

You do. On completion, all source code, designs and documentation produced for your project transfer to you. We operate under NDA by default and do not reuse client-specific code across engagements.

How do you handle integrations with our existing systems?

Integration surface is mapped during discovery, because it is the most common source of overrun. We build against documented contracts, isolate third-party systems behind adapters, and test integrations continuously rather than at the end.

What happens if requirements change mid-project?

They will. Incremental delivery exists so change is cheap: scope is steered at each increment using what the working software has taught you. Material changes are re-estimated openly rather than absorbed silently and surfaced later as a delay.
